Sutherland Ranch
Sutherland Ranch is a 160 acre, privately owned family farm located in northwest Wisconsin. In addition to the Skaj family, the ranch is home to a handful of horses and an Angus cow/calf herd. The cattle and horses are pastured separately on the farm utilizing all of the acreage. Hay is made from nearby fields. The terrain is a loam, sand mix with elevation of 1050 feet, and a mixture of hardwood trees and conifers providing shade zones. Cattle are pastured outdoors 365 days/year and calving takes place each spring in the "birthing pasture". Horses are pastured outside and brought in depending on weather conditions. There is always a variety of activities going on at the ranch, depending on the time of the year. The busy season runs from calving time in the spring until late fall, when snow begins to fly. Horses are exercised lightly during the "off season" in the winter, in a small indoor arena. The rest of the year, the horses are ridden in one of the two large outdoor arenas or nearby trails and pastures. Bayfield County is home to literally hundreds of miles of roads and trails throughout the Chequamegon National Forest, with abundant opportunities for trail riding. There are Open Horse Shows in the region as well. Strategically located, Sutherland Ranch is only minutes away from prime riding opportunities for the outdoor riding enthusiast! We like to stay busy on Sutherland Ranch, and there is always something to do! We work at "real jobs" too, so time free from our jobs is spent keeping up with the farm. Cattle, horses and general upkeep manage to take a good portion of our time. "Leisure" time is spent with our horses as well. We try to ride as close to daily as we can, be it in the arena or on the trails. We sometimes have to check fence or check cows, so any excuse is a good excuse to ride! Having fun with our horses is top priority. Just like our horses need socialization - so do we! Several riders come together for camaraderie and to work toward similar riding goals, to create a great atmosphere! Everyone supports one another and every rider leaves with a smile on their face!
